20 years of special painted Dutch F-16's
The Netherlands was one of the four initial European NATO customers for the F-16. The first order was for 102 examples, 80 F-16A and 22 F-16B. Later another 111 aircraft where ordered, of witch 97 where F-16A and 14 where F-16B. The planes where assembled by Fokker and the first one was delivered in 1979.

After a couple years in service, the first special paint schemes where made. In this article is a list of most of them.

On 9 July 2010, this page was updated with some pitures of Jos van Nes from the Netherlands. He was the designer of a number of the special schemes.
Here below some pitures he send me for this article.

 

In 1988 the Dutch Royal Air Force celebrated its 75 years. To celebrate this, the
F-16A with serial J-864 got a special painting.
On the tail is the text KLu 75 and from the tail to nose is a band with the 3 colors of the Netherlands (red, white, blue).

This picture was taken on 2 July 1988 at the air show in Deelen, where the 75 years celebration was held.

In 1989 it was 10 years that the Dutch Royal Air Force was flying with the F-16. There for the tail of a F-16B with serial J-259 was painted with the colors red, white, blue and orange. Also on the tail, are the text 10 jaar, F-16 and Leeuwarden.

In 1990 it was only for the second time, that a air show was held at de navel airbase Valkenburg. On that day there was F-16A with serial J-058, that hat a special painted tail. On the tail where the colors red, white and blue.

In 1991 the 312 squadron existed 40 years and for that purpose, a F-16A with serial J-864, got a special paint shop on the tail. The tail was black and on that was the squadron badge. Above the badge was the text 312 and below 40 jaar. Under the black tail was band with the colors red, white and blue.

In 1991 also the 311 squadron was celebrating its 40 years. For this occasion the F-16A with serial J-197 got a special tail painting. The main color was light blue. Below that where the colors red, white and blue. On the light blue part, there was a eagle with a crown in its beak. Under the crown was the text 40 jaar and in the band red, white and blue was the text 311.

In 1992 this was the paint scheme of the demonstration F-16A, serial J-226. On the tail are the colors red, white and blue. This color scheme is also painted on top de wing en fuselage.

This picture was taken on 5 June 1992 during the air show at Valkenburg.

For the year 1992 there where two F-16A with the same paint scheme. So paint scheme of this F-16A serial J-213 is the same as the F-16A with serial J-226.

In 1994 paint scheme of the demonstration F-16A, serial J-253, was a little different then de previous years. The same color band on the tail, wing and fuselage, but at a different angle.

In 1993 and 1994 this F-16B, serial J-068, hat tiger on its tail. The background color of the tail was black and dark blue.

For the year 1995, yet another variation was made on the color scheme of the demonstrators of the years 1992 – 1994. The mayor difference was that de colors red, white and blue only where on the upper part of the fuselage. On the tail where a crown and a logo of the Royal Dutch Air Force. Direct behind the cockpit was the text RNLAF SOLO DISPLAY. This solo display F-16A hat the serial J-508 and the picture were taken on 1 July 1995 during the air show at Volkel.

Also in 1996 was this F-16A the solo display aircraft.

In 1997 the F-16 demonstrator got a new color scheme, but yet again not a lot different form the previous year. The only real difference was that now almost al of the top of the fuselage was painted in red, white and blue. The serial of this F-16A was J-364. For 1998 the same F-16A was just.

Also in 1997 it was the 45th anniversary of 315th squadron. To celebrate this, F-16A with serial J-257, got a special paint scheme on the tail. The whole tail was painted dark blue. On that a lion head. Under that the text 45 years Dutch Lions.

In 1998 a very special painting scheme was put on F-16A with serial J-236, for the celebration of 85th anniversary of the Royal Dutch Air Force, day and night.

On the left side and the right side of the airplane, where different paint schemes. The left side was painted in a night scheme with gold stars on a black background. The right side was painted in a day scheme of white clouds on a blue sky background.

The 323 squadron at Leeuwarden has as a symbol Diana, goddess of the hunt. Normally only the badge is on the tail, but this time the whole tail was painted with Diana. This piece of artwork was painted on a F-16A, with serial J-642.

In 1998 the 322 squadron celebrated it 55th anniversary. For that occasion the tail of a F-16AM, serial J-004, got a special paint shop. On the tail there was a sort of red triangle, with the head of a parrot (Polly Grey). This is the mascot of the squadron. Also in white the text 55.

Also in 1998, the 306 squadron hat a celebration, namely 45th anniversary. A special scheme was painted on the tail of a F-16A, serial J-636. De background was light en dark blue. On that the head of an eagle. Below that was a text with 45 jaar and 306 TFRS.

And yet another celebration in 1998, the 313 squadron got also her 45th anniversary. This time an F-16B with serial J-265 got something special on its tail. A tiger head and claw. On top of that the text 39 SQN in yellow.

In 1999 the NATO celebrated its 50 years anniversary. For this reason an F-16A with serial J-196 got very nice painting on his tail. It’s a mix of the logo form NATO and a tiger head. Below the head of the tiger is the text 313 SQN. A nice detail is the peeling of the paint at some places.

This F-16B with serial J-265 has almost the same paint scheme on its tail for the 50 years anniversary celebration of NATO. The difference with the previous is, the tiger is a little smaller, the NATO logo is bigger and text 313 SQN is planner.

This picture was taken on 29 October 1999 at Volkel.

Another one to celebrated 50 years of NATO. This time it’s a F-16A serial J-220. The tail is blue and the NATO logo in white. Behind this logo is a big 50, also in white. Below this is the text NATO 1949 – 1999 OTAN.

This is another painting of Diana, Goddess of the Hunt. This time on a F-16A with serial J-230.

And another Diana, Goddess of the Hunt on a F-16, but this time with a difference, a naked female breast. The lucky F-16A was the J-248. The design was altered under pressure of the general staff of the Air Force.

In 1998 the 313 squadron celebrated its 45th anniversary. The F-16B with serial J-270 got a tiger head and claw on its tail. Behind this is something like a tear Dutch flag.

This F-16BM with serial J-657 has a nice tiger head on its tail. Below that the text 313 squadron in yellow.

On this F-16AM with serial J-002 we got another Diana on the tail. On the other airplanes you only hat the upper part of Diana, but on this one there is a complete lady on the tail.

In 2003, the 306 squadron celebrate its 50th anniversary. The F-16BM with serial J-270 was chosen to get a special painted tail. De background on the tail was bark blue en light blue. In the bark blue there white stars. In red a big 50. In the null is a yellow head of an eagle.

In 2001 the F-16 demonstrator got a new color scheme. This time it was a complete different scheme then al the previous ones. In al the previous ones the colors where those of the Dutch flag. Now the colors where black, grey and silver. Also the complete F-16AM with serial J-016 was painted in this color scheme.

In 2002 the 315 squadron celebrated its 50th anniversary. On the tail of the F-16AM with serial J-138, a very big head of al lion was painted. The colors just in this painting are white, black and gold.

In 2004 the 313 squadron celebrated its 50th anniversary. A special tail painting was put on the tail of an F-16AM with serial J-366. On a black background a eye of a tiger is painted on the tail and skin around the eye is tear like a claw is gone true it.

In 1979 the first Dutch F-16 was officially handed over to the Royal Dutch Air Force. 2004 marks the 25th anniversary of the F-16 in service. For this reason a special paint scheme was put a F-16A with serial J-229. The paint scheme looked like the original paint scheme applied on the YF-16 prototypes back in 1974.

A second F-16 of the 313 squadron got something on its tail, to celebrant the 50th anniversary of the squadron. This F-16AM with serial J-015 got only a very big badge on its tail, with a tiger.

In 2005 the F-16 demonstrator got a new color scheme. The F-16AM with serial J-055 was just. This color scheme is a evolution of the previous one. The main difference is de part around the cockpit, witch now is complete black. Also orange was put on some parts of the aircraft.

In 2003 the 322 squadron celebrated its 60th anniversary. This time a F-16AM with serial J-063 was just to celebrate is event. The tail was painted with white and light grey and on top of that was the head of the grey parrot (Polly Grey).

In 2008 the F-16 demonstrator got a very small change in its paintwork. Because of the EC 2008 football in Switzerland/Austria, the serial J-055 was painted in orange. Also the tail is now in silver and grey.

In 2008 the 322 squadron celebrated its 65th anniversary. This time a F-16AM with serial J-878 was just to celebrate is event. The tail was painted with red and black and on top of that was the head of the grey parrot (Polly Grey).
